How Often Have You Gotten Yourself In A Mess Because You Were Not Mentally Strong?

This is an ongoing challenge that most of us face in life! How often have we felt so uncomfortable in the emotional situation and we cannot stand the tension because we were mentally not strong enough.

A sign of mental maturity is the ability to hold tension. To experience the emotional tension and yet not react. Holding allows us space and time to process the situation, without being in a quick hurry to emotionally dump on someone or something.

Some examples of times when we were not mentally strong:

  • Jumping into relationships because of a fear of being alone
  • Not seeing the positives in situations because we were dwelling in the past
  • Feeling the world is against us when we do not get what we want
  • Feeling impatient and wanting immediate results with anything we get involved in
  • Fear of taking responsibility because of a fear of what others might say
  • Trying to please everyone
  • Letting others influence our emotions

So what can we do? To be mentally strong, it takes effort and it is a process, and it doesn’t come overnight. But here are some tips which you may find useful:

Whenever you feel mentally or emotionally weak, focus on your breathing. Your breath always takes you back to the present moment, to the here and now, where nothing else matters.

The pace of our breathing should be minimally at 5 seconds at in-breath and 5 seconds at out-breath. When you are in control of your breathing, you will find that you have greater clarity mentally, and emotionally you become more still. Deep breathing this way helps to calm you down and gives you an awareness of taking time to make decisions that are rational, logical and less emotional. It helps build your mental state from strength to strength.

For people on the spiritual path, being strong mentally is even more crucial. This is because our thoughts attract energies and our emotions move these energies.  And if we are not in command of our thoughts, we will attract unwanted energies into our spiritual practices.

In the meantime, focus on your breathing, making sure you are breathing deeply and remaining calm in your emotional and mental states.
